MN 1: Mulapariyaya Sutta: The Root Sequence
From the Majjhima Nikaya, "The Middle-Length Discourses", I present the abridged Mulapariyaya Sutta, "The Root Sequence"
The Buddha once told the monks he'd teach them the root "sequence" of all phenomena. Then he said: "Ignorant, unenlightened people perceive things, conceive things about things, conceive other things coming out of those things, conceive of things as 'mine' and delight in them, and that's just because they don't comprehend them. The elements, the gods, the dimensions of consciousness, the objects of the senses, singleness, multiplicity, and The All themselves, they do this stuff about them all. They do the same thing to unbinding/liberation/nirvana, and it's all because they don't comprehend any of it"
"Someone who yearns for the unexcelled relief from bondage should not do any of this stuff to anything, they shouldn't do all this conceiving about all this stuff, conceiving it as theirs, and delighting in it. Why? Because that's how they're going to end up truly knowing this stuff directly, including Unbinding"
"Wise and enlightened people, including The Gone One, don't do all of this conceiving, don't conceive of any of it as 'mine', and don't delight in it. Why? Because The Gone One has known that delight is the root of suffering and stress, that from coming-into-being there is birth, and that for what has come into being there is aging and death. Therefore, with the total ending, fading away, cessation, letting go, relinquishment of craving, the Gone One has totally awakened to the unexcelled right self-awakening, I tell you.
Displeased, the monks were not delighted with his words.
